Trail Ride Training: First Riding Lesson with Jan- September

September 20th, 2020-

We bought Ashkar in May 2020 and had a different trainer for the first 5 months. Eventually, we found Jan and she was the perfect fit for training Ashkar and I, as well as Rockstar and Abigail. When we first started with Jan, the first thing that we worked on was getting them supplements/ nutrition and doing ground work. Next, which is what this photo shows, we worked on riding, where we just walked and stopped, and getting on from the mounting block. Even though she had been ridden a lot prior to this, we were both learning a new method which required us to start with the basics. At the same time as this, I started this project, where I started trail riding them. It was a lot for her to adjust to at first which is why we started off relatively easy. When we first started with Jan, one of Ashkar's biggest problems was stopping. She would not stop when you asked her, and since this is arguably one of the most important things when riding, we worked with her on this. For the first few lessons we just walked and did some trotting and worked on other things relating to this. Then we moved on to more trotting and later cantering. It was important that I had a foundation when I started taking her out on trails, which is what I worked on with her here too.
